Biofuels
Already relevant industry
Rio Grande do Sul is already one of the largest producers of soy, corn and animal fat in Brazil, essential raw materials for the production of biofuels, especially biodiesel. Furthermore, it has a well-developed agricultural infrastructure, with a vast transport and storage network, as well as a qualified workforce in the sector, facilitating the production and distribution of biofuels.
Research and Development
There are several research institutions in Rio Grande do Sul that are working on developing more efficient technologies for the production of biofuels, which could lead to advances that make production in Rio Grande do Sul even more competitive.
Renewable energies
Relevant renewable industry in the State
Rio Grande do Sul already has several companies installed and investing in the generation of renewable energy throughout the state, which is a relevant sector in the economy of Rio Grande do Sul.
Growing internal and external demand for consumption
Energy consumption in Rio Grande do Sul has grown at a rate 3x greater than the state's installed capacity, with processes of digitalization and industrialization of the economy requiring a robust increase in energy generation. Furthermore, public and private decarbonization climate commitments increase the need to use clean, renewable sources of electricity to replace fossil sources.
Potential for renewable generation at a competitive cost
High and growing wind potential in the Southern Half (on and off-shore) and relevant solar potential in Campanha and the Northwest with generation at competitive costs, can constitute a socioeconomic lever for the development of key regions.
green hydrogen
Distinctive performance in the generation of renewable energy
RS has a high capacity for generating solar energy, and, above all, onshore and offshore wind energy with competitive costs. There are projects already in operation in the state, which, combined with licensing initiatives, could place Rio Grande do Sul as a protagonist in wind generation.
Local economy fueled by industries with demand for clean energy
H2V applications connect to important sectors of the economy of Rio Grande do Sul, such as agriculture, petroleum derivatives and biodiesel, due to the influence exerted on products derived from ammonia and methanol (fertilizers, biodiesel, formaldehyde, etc.) . Other conventional uses of H2 include the hydrogenated vegetable oil (food) industry, cellulose and paper (hydrogen peroxide), and glass.
Formation of a business environment focused on H2V production
The state government launched the RS H2V Program to develop the green hydrogen production chain, with tax incentives, investments in research and development and support for the installation of companies in the sector, aiming at the production and export of H2 through Rio Grande do Sul.
